The Order's chronicle
The chronicle of the Order of the Silver Dragon, in many hands. Its founding by the Lord Argynvost, who kept a lamp burning in his tower so that the valley would know it was watched. Tournaments, a flood, a wolf winter. Then the army over the mountains, the passes lost one by one, the house besieged. The last page is in a heavy, careful hand: The house fell tonight. My lord died in the courtyard. They have taken his head to the castle to hang on a wall. The Order will not rest. V.H.
Writing on the wall
The whole wall is covered in charcoal, floor to as high as a tall man can reach, in a big careful hand. Names, and after each one a few words. Sir Teodor: pears, and his grey mare. Sir Bastian: arguing. Dame Ilona: her son, who lived. Sir Mattias: songs he got wrong on purpose. Hundreds more. Near the bottom, smudged and gone over many times: Godfrey: Gwenllian, who laughed like a goose. The light. The oath. Remember the oath.
The duty roster
A duty roster, kept every night in the same square hand for longer than anyone should keep anything. Gate: Teodor, Bastian. Wall: Ilona, Mattias. Beacon: none. Beacon: none. Beacon: none. Every night the same, and under each night one line: All present. None dismissed.
