The burgomaster's ledger
The village ledger of Krezk, in Dmitri's square hand. Births, deaths, goats, the wine cart each autumn and what it cost. The deaths outnumber the births by two pages. Five names on the last page are in a different ink and underlined: Pyotr, Mila, Sofia, Anya, Lev. The sixth line has been ruled and left empty, and the ruling has been gone over many times.
