Side quest Vallaki Level 5

The Missing Girl

Arabelle, the young daughter of the Vistani headman Luvash, vanished from the camp outside Vallaki in the night.

Walkthrough

Getting the quest

Luvash is the one who sets you looking. He sits on the steps of his wagon in The Vistani Camp, outside Vallaki's west gate, at any hour. The first time you speak to him the quest moves to Asked, whatever you answer. You can hear about him first in several ways (each opens the quest at Rumored):

loc vallaki vistani camp 1

Step by step

  1. Talk to Luvash. He's shouting at the camp with a bottle in each hand. His daughter Arabelle, who is seven, has been gone from her bed since last night, and his brother Arrigal says she wandered off. "Tell us what happened" gets you the details. "We'll find her" makes him friendly and earns approval from Kip Smudgewick (+2), Godrick Pendlebrook (+2) and Thistle (+1). Arrigal will brush you off if you ask him about her, so don't count on him.
  2. Find out what happened to her. Any one of these leads you to the fisherman. They all need you to have spoken to Luvash first:
    • The Vistana at the fire. Choose "We're looking for Arabelle. Did you see anything?" She saw Bluto, the fisherman from town, walking the shore last night with a moving sack. The journal moves to Clue.
    • The camp dog, with Speak with Animals. It saw her carried off in a sack and tells you the same thing (Clue).
    • "Marks in the mud" on the lakeshore by Luvash's wagon, a hidden spot you find with a search (DC 12). This doesn't change the journal, but it's enough to bring Bluto out.
  3. Stop Bluto. Bluto Krogarov is now wading into the lake at the north edge of the camp, by the nets, with a kicking sack on his shoulder. When you get within six squares he speaks first. There's no way to walk away from this conversation. You have three choices:
    • Persuasion DC 13: talk him back to the shore.
    • Intimidation DC 13: tell him what happens if he lets go.
    • Athletics DC 12: charge in and grab the sack.

If any of these works, you have Arabelle. If it fails, he throws the sack into deep water.

  4. If he throws it, dive. The game picks your best swimmer for an Athletics DC 13 check. If that fails, your most perceptive hero gets a second try with Perception DC 12. If either passes, Arabelle is saved. If both fail, she's lost for good.

  5. Take her home. Once she's rescued she sits on her father's knee by his wagon. Talk to Luvash and he gives you 50 gp and his grandmother's Cloak of the Manta Ray. If Madam Eva's reading hid one of the three treasures in his chest (the Tax Collector card), he then opens it, since it wouldn't open for him while she was gone, and gives you the treasure too.

Choices and endings

  • Rescued (success). Pulling her out earns approval from Kip Smudgewick (+3), Godrick Pendlebrook, Liriel Dawnsong and Thistle (+2 each), and Wren Featherfoot and Ratatouille (+1 each). Luvash's reward is 50 gp and the Cloak of the Manta Ray, and he declares every Vistani wagon in Barovia yours. Arabelle stays at the camp afterwards with a word or two of prophecy each time you visit.
  • Arabelle as your Tarokka ally. If Madam Eva's reading named Arabelle as your ally, Luvash pays you first (and opens his chest, if the reading put a treasure in it), and then his thanks turns into a choice: "We'll keep her safe" means she joins your party, and "stay with your father" means she stays (Kip +1). If she stays, she can still join you later from a drifting boat at the Lake Zarovich jetty, once you've dealt with Bluto there.
  • Lost (failure). Both dives fail. Luvash sits with an empty bottle and sends you away, and there's no reward of his own. If the reading named Arabelle your ally, The Destined Ally ends at Lost as well, even if Madam Eva reads your cards after she drowned. If the reading hid a treasure in Luvash's chest (the Tax Collector card), it isn't lost with her: talk to him and he tells you to take whatever's in the chest, and hands you the treasure.
  • Either way. Bluto turns up later at Lake Zarovich: the Fishers' Landing, and you can decide what happens to him there. The old fisher at the landing also has a new question for you, which leads to The Bell Under the Lake.

If you're stuck

  • The Vistana has nothing to say. Her clue only appears while the journal says Asked. Talk to Luvash first.
  • No Bluto. He only appears once you have the clue, or once you've talked to Luvash and found the marks in the mud.
  • Luvash's chest won't open. It has no lock to pick or force. It opens once Arabelle is home or lost, and either way Luvash hands you whatever the reading put in it. Before then only magic such as Knock opens it, and it's his, so being seen is theft.
  • Arabelle keeps asking to come. If she's your Tarokka ally and you told her to stay, she asks again, briefly, each time you talk to Luvash ("Have you come back for me?"), so you can say "Not yet" or change your mind and take her. The reward isn't held up by her question: Luvash pays the 50 gp and the cloak the first time you talk to him after the rescue, before she speaks, so the cloak is yours whichever way you answer.

Journal

Every journal entry and hint

Rumored: The Vistani camped outside Vallaki's west gate have lost their headman's little girl. His brother Arrigal says she wandered off. Not everyone believes Arrigal.
Hint: Visit the Vistani camp outside Vallaki's west gate and talk to Luvash.

Asked: Luvash, headman of the Vistani camp outside Vallaki, is drinking himself senseless because his daughter Arabelle has been missing since last night. His brother Arrigal runs the camp and seems in no hurry to find her.
Hint: Ask the Vistani around the camp's fire about Arabelle.

Clue: A Vistana at the campfire saw a fisherman walking the lakeshore last night with a sack over his shoulder, and the sack was moving.
Hint: Search the lakeshore north of the camp; follow the fisherman.

Rescued (the end: success): We pulled Arabelle out of Bluto the fisherman's sack before the lake could have her, and brought her home to Luvash.

Lost (the end: failure): We were too slow. The lake closed over Bluto's sack, and Luvash's camp mourns a daughter it will never bury.
