Side quest Castle Ravenloft Level 10

The Unnamed Crypt

One crypt in Castle Ravenloft's catacombs has no name on it, and something in it holds the count's doors.

Walkthrough

Getting the quest

Ask Pidlwick II Heard anything interesting?, on the grand landing of Castle Ravenloft, the High Tower or while he travels with you. He chalks it on his slate: a lady in the cellars with the dead holds doors for the count all night, and has no name on her box. The quest starts at Rumored. You can also skip him and just find the crypt, which starts the quest at Found.

The name matters. If you have played The Mage's Lost Pages for Mordenkainen on Mount Baratok far enough to learn his apprentice's name, Corvina, bring it with you. Saying it at the crypt makes the fight much easier.

Step by step

  1. Go down to Castle Ravenloft, the Catacombs, by the stairs off the chapel passage on the main floor or by the long stair from the larders.

  2. The crypt is the last one in the east row, south of the sleepers' crypt, behind an ordinary iron gate. Be careful along that row: walking into the sleepers' crypt wakes its Vampire Spawn (3 at night, 2 by day, surprised in their coffins), and the champion's tomb at the north end of the row has six gargoyles.
  3. Use A crypt with no name. The lid has handprints in the dust, from the inside. The quest moves to Found.
  4. Choose one:
    • Corvina. (only if you know her name). She sits up, takes her name back, asks you to tell Mordenkainen she'd do it again, and warns you she can't stop herself.
    • (Lift the lid.) She sits up and tells you this door is held.
    • (Leave it shut.) to come back later.

  5. Either way you fight. The gates along the row swing shut, and you face Corvina, the Doorkeeper (CR 12) and a Door-Warden, a Helmed Horror (9,500 XP). Unnamed, she has her full 165 Hit Points. Named, she has 105 at level 10 and 100 at level 9; below level 9, naming her also keeps the Door-Warden away. She regains 10 Hit Points at the start of each turn unless she took radiant damage since her last one, so keep radiant damage on her. She can shrug off two failed saves a day, and her Slam the Door is a 30-foot cone (Constitution DC 17, 5d8 thunder and a push).
  6. When she falls, use the crypt again. Under where she lay are 500 gp in old coin and a Rod of Absorption. The quest is Done.

Choices and endings

  • Done (success), whichever way you opened the lid. Named, she sits on the edge of her crypt and fades, asking you to put her name on the box. Unnamed, she falls to dust, and her name is on a slip of paper in her coat; from then on you know her name. Mordenkainen still needs his letters back, though: until you bring them (The Mage's Lost Pages), his news in the hut stays on them. The rewards and approval are the same: Ratatouille +3, Liriel +2, Godrick +2, Wren +1, Thistle +1.
  • Later: Mordenkainen thanks you for finding her, the next time you ask him "Heard anything interesting?" once he has his letters back. In The Forgotten Storm, if you say her name to his storm (from his letters, or the slip in her coat) and she is already at rest, you can tell it "She's at rest. Her name's on her crypt. You can stop now." and it lets go without a fight.

If you're stuck

  • The fight ended but the quest didn't. The rewards and the Done stage come from using the crypt again after the fight.
  • No "Corvina." option. You only learn her name from Mordenkainen's lost letters in The Mage's Lost Pages.

Rewards

What your companions think

  • Ratatouille: +3 you put Corvina's name on her crypt
  • Liriel Dawnsong: +2 you put Corvina's name on her crypt
  • Godrick Pendlebrook: +2 you put Corvina's name on her crypt
  • Wren Featherfoot: +1 you put Corvina's name on her crypt
  • Thistle: +1 you put Corvina's name on her crypt

Fights

By party level (the first line your party fits is the fight you get)

Journal

Every journal entry and hint

Rumored: Pidlwick II says there's a lady in the catacombs who holds doors for the count all night, and has no name on her box. Everybody has a name on their box. Even the horse.
Hint: Search Castle Ravenloft's catacombs for the crypt with no name on it.

Found: At the end of a row in the catacombs, a small crypt with no name ever cut into it, and handprints in the dust on the lid from the inside.
Hint: If you've learned whose crypt it is, say her name at it; otherwise lift the lid, ready for a fight.

Done (the end: success): The crypt was Corvina's, Mordenkainen's apprentice, who held a door against the count forty years ago and held his doors ever since. Her name is on her crypt now.
