Walkthrough
Getting the quest
When every character in the party is level 6 or higher, ask Clovin Belview at the gate of The Abbey of St. Markovia "Heard anything interesting?". After his news about Mother, he tells you about Lark, his cousin's girl. Every night after the last bell she goes over the abbey wall and down the Krezk road toward the old stone with the sun cut into it, and every morning she's back with wax on her fingers. The quest starts at Rumored, and a new place appears on the travel map: The Waystone, 2 hours east of Krezk or 3 hours from Vallaki on the Old Svalich Road.
Step by step
- Go to the Waystone at night. By day you only find a burnt-down candle in the niche of the stone. After dark, Lark, a small Belview girl with a lark's feathers and legs, kneels at the stone lighting a new candle. She speaks when you get close, first in her dead mother's voice and then in her own: please go on by (Asked).

- Find out who the candle is for. Ask "We're not from the Abbey. Who's the candle for?", or try Insight DC 12 to see where she keeps looking: two eyes low in the trees past the bend. Either way she tells you. Her brother Yanko went over the wall two winters ago and the wolves took him; they didn't eat him. He comes to the edge of the light every night to hear her sing their mother's songs. Then howls come down the road. The pack has noticed him going soft.
- Stand by the stone with her. Choose "(Stand by the stone with her.)" to fight Waystone Wolves: 4 Pack Hunters (Werewolfs) and a Wolf (2,850 XP), the same at every level. At level 6 this is a hard fight. The hunters attack twice a turn, and every one of them fights better with a packmate beside you, so don't let one of yours get surrounded. "(Leave her to it, for now.)" lets you rest first; talk to her again on a later night to pick it back up. Winning moves the quest to Defended.
- Talk to Lark again while it's still night. For the first time, Yanko, a young grey wolf with one hound's ear, lies at the edge of the light, bleeding from a bite: he fought the pack too.
- Persuasion DC 13 ("Talk to him, low and slow, the way she sings") turns him back into a boy of fifteen.
- "(Let her sing to him.)", or a failed roll, leaves him a wolf. But he comes into the light and lies down at her feet.
Choices and endings
Both endings close the quest (Done) and pay the same: Lark gives you the Abbot's Wand of Slumber, which she stole from his room the first night she went over the wall, and Yanko noses a traveller's purse out of the ditch (120 gp). Thistle +3, Wren +2, Godrick +2, Liriel +1.
- A boy again. If you've already finished Clovin's Audience, so that Old Pavel is family, Lark takes Yanko down to live with him in Krezk, and Clovin's news says they're in Pavel's loft. At the stone, two sets of bare footprints lie beside the lit candle.
- Still a wolf (or a boy with no Pavel to go to). Clovin says Lark still goes over the wall at night, and something grey walks her home and waits at the gate until she's in.
If you're stuck
- No Waystone on the map? You need the rumour first, and Clovin only tells it once everyone in the party is level 6. His "Heard anything interesting?" is always there, before or after the Abbot's story is settled, so ask him again once you've levelled up.
- Lark is only there at night.
