Cold Prayers

Hedda Ironvow dreamed of a dying sun and a silver raven, and left her chapel before dawn to follow the dream. Since she crossed the mist, her god has been very far away.

Walkthrough

Getting the quest

This is Hedda Ironvow's personal quest (the Dwarf Cleric of the Life Domain, with the Acolyte background). Hedda is one of the first four heroes, and they left the roster on 2026-10-06, so a new game can't pick her. The quest only runs in a save from before then with Hedda in the party. A custom hero never answers to her name. Companion approval doesn't apply to her, so the ending isn't gated by it. The approval listed above comes from returning St. Andral's bones, which counts for the six new heroes if they're with you.

It starts the first time you walk into the mist at the east end of The Old Svalich Road with Hedda in the party. The ending is in Castle Ravenloft, and you need the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind first.

Step by step

  1. Cold. Hedda admits her prayers answer cold, in one of two places:
    • Madam Eva. Pay for the reading with Hedda's truth ("Admit what the mist did to her prayers").
    • At camp. After the burgomaster is buried, a Long Rest brings "Hedda wants a word": she stops halfway through her evening prayer.

The quest moves to Cold. Spending Eva's question on "Will dawn ever come to this valley?" makes Hedda mention it later at camp.

  2. The symbol. At the Village Church, ask Father Donavich Is any relic of the Morninglord left in this valley? with Hedda in the party. He names the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind: "Lost, mind. Not destroyed." The quest moves to The Symbol.

  3. A spark (optional). When St. Andral's bones go back to Father Lucian at St. Andral's Church in Vallaki with Hedda present, she feels warmth for one breath. The quest moves to A Spark. Lucian also gives you two Holy Water, and Vallaki's milestone level if it hasn't come yet (The Bones of St. Andral).
  4. The Keepers (optional). Once Urwin Martikov at The Blue Water Inn has shown you the Keepers of the Feather, Davian Martikov at The Wizard of Wines has Hedda's Ask about a silver raven with a sunburst in its claws. He tells her the raven's story and gives her advice about pruning vines in winter. The quest moves to The Keepers.
  5. Find the Holy Symbol. Find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind where Madam Eva's reading put it (The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind). At the next Long Rest after it's found, "Hedda wants a word": it's warm in her hands. The quest moves to Warmth.
  6. Dawn. In Castle Ravenloft, the Chapel, examine The altar step with Hedda in the party. She kneels with the silver raven. Pick (Kneel beside her.) or (Keep watch at the doors.); both lead to her prayer. (Not now. Bring her away.) leaves it for later. The quest ends at Dawn.

Choices and endings

There's one ending, Dawn (success): for the length of her prayer, real dawn comes through the chapel's glass, and the warmth stays in your hands a little longer than it should. If Strahd is lying in his coffin at the time, something far below turns its face to the wall. There are no rolls and no failure ending. Nothing later in the files checks this ending.

If you're stuck

  • The camp talk for Warmth waits on the Symbol. It only plays once the Holy Symbol's quest says found. Steps 3 and 4 are optional.
  • Strahd's final room: if Madam Eva's reading put Strahd's final room in the chapel, walking into the nave starts the final battle, and the prayer can only follow it.

Journal

Every journal entry and hint

The Dream: For a year Hedda dreamed the same dream: a sun going out, and a silver raven holding a sunburst in its claws. The Stonelight Chapel's oldest book says that symbol was carried into a land of mists and never came back. Her elders told her dreams are not orders. She left anyway, quietly, before dawn.
Hint: Ask Father Donavich at the village church about the silver raven, or let Hedda speak her truth to Madam Eva at Tser Pool.

Cold: Since the mist, Hedda's prayers still answer, but they answer cold. She has not felt the Morninglord's warmth once in Barovia. She told almost no one, because a healer who doubts is a healer nobody lets near the bed.
Hint: Ask Father Donavich in the village of Barovia about the raven from Hedda's dream.

The Symbol: Father Donavich knew the raven: the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, older than his church, carried against the castle once and lost. Lost, he said. Not destroyed.
Hint: Find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind where Madam Eva's reading says it lies; the Martikovs at the Wizard of Wines know its old story.

A Spark: When St. Andral's bones went back under the altar in Vallaki, Hedda felt it: warmth, for the space of a breath, like a hand laid on the back of her neck. The light still reaches this valley. It reaches where somebody carries it.
Hint: Find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind where Madam Eva's reading says it lies; Davian Martikov at the Wizard of Wines knows its old story.

The Keepers: Davian Martikov's family keeps the old story: the sun was given to a raven at the world's first dawn, and a raven brought it down into this valley for whoever was willing to carry it back into the dark for somebody else. The ravens have been waiting a long time for someone to ask.
Hint: Find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind where Madam Eva's reading says it lies, then rest with Hedda in the party.

Warmth: Hedda held the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, and it was warm. Not the sun, not yet. A coal kept alive in a cupped hand. 'Carry it into his house,' Madam Eva said, 'and you will see the difference.'
Hint: Carry the Holy Symbol into Castle Ravenloft and take Hedda to the chapel's altar step.

Dawn (the end: success): Hedda carried the raven's sun into the devil's house, and in his own chapel, for the space of a prayer, dawn arrived. It was warm. She knew it would be.
