Dumitru waits inside Krezk's gate for a visitor who never comes, and writes weekly letters to an uncle in Vallaki who died.
Walkthrough
Getting the quest
Once the gate of Krezk is open to you (The Gate of Krezk), Dumitru waits just inside it from 9:00 to 17:00, except in a storm. Ask him "Who are you waiting for, Dumitru?" He wants a visitor, someone who comes up the hill on purpose. Every Sunday he writes to his Uncle Marius in Vallaki, who died long ago, and the letters wait in a biscuit tin by the gate. The quest starts at Asked.
Step by step
There are two ways to give him a visitor. There's no fight either way.
- Optional: ask who might come. "Who might come up the road for you?" points you to a man in a shabby coat with a little leather book at the crossroads, who once gave Krezk's wall five stars from the ditch.
- The quick way: come as his uncle's friends. Choose "Tell him you're old friends of his Uncle Marius, come to see him." He tries very hard to stand up straight. Then:
- [Deception DC 12] "(Tell him stories of Marius, with voices.)" A pass and he believes you. He knew his uncle remembered how he takes his tea, and he'll write tonight to say you arrived in one piece. The quest ends at Done (see below). A fail: he tells you kindly that Uncle Marius didn't have friends, he had a grey cat named Turnip, and that he'd rather have a real visitor. One try only.
- "(Tell him the truth instead.)" takes you back to his questions.
Once you've offered to be his uncle's friends, the offer is gone from his questions, whether you told the stories or owned up. If it didn't work, go the other way.
- The kind way: fetch Ambrose Fennimore. At The River Ivlis Crossroads, Ambrose Fennimore the travel writer stands by the signpost from 7:00 to 19:00. Tell him "A boy at Krezk's gate would like a visitor." His chapter on Krezk currently reads "High wall, smells of turnip, declined to enter," so he agrees to follow you at his own pace. The quest moves to Fennimore, and he leaves the crossroads.
- Meet them inside the gate. Go back to Krezk. Fennimore is waiting just inside the gate, at any hour, and speaks to you as soon as you come near. He inspects Dumitru's tin, gives it four stars for preservation, and leaves a slip of paper for it: "Krezk: Four stars. Cold, steep, excellent reception at the gate." The quest ends at Done.
Choices and endings
Both endings are a success. The difference is the reward.
- His uncle's friends (Deception passed): 20 gp. Wren (+1) and Liriel (+1) approve. Afterwards Dumitru tells you he'll know you if you ever come back, and you won't even have to knock.
- Fennimore's visit: 40 gp. Wren (+1), Liriel (+1) and Thistle (+1) approve. Dumitru is delighted that Krezk beat the Blue Water Inn. Afterwards he says Fennimore might give a fifth star if the sun ever comes out, and that he wrote a two-page Sunday about it. Fennimore goes back to his signpost at the crossroads.
If you're stuck
- No Dumitru? He's only inside the gate from 9:00 to 17:00, and not in a storm. You can't reach him until the watchman opens the gate.
- No Fennimore at the crossroads? He's there from 7:00 to 19:00. His option about the boy only shows while the quest is at Asked, so talk to Dumitru first.
- The Deception roll failed? Fennimore's way has no roll at all, and pays more.
Rewards
- 20 gp or 40 gp, depending on how it goes
